Marvin Gaye - "Here, My Dear." (2LP) - EXC/VG+

Marvin Gaye's "Here, My Dear" is an album that stands as a poignant testament to the complexities of love, heartbreak, and personal battle. Released on December 15, 1978, this album is often regarded as one of Gaye's most personal works, reflecting his tumultuous affair with his first wife, Anna Gordy. The album's creation was not just a musical endeavor; it was a deeply emotional journey for Gaye, who poured his heart and soul into the lyrics and melodies.

The backstory of "Here, My Dear" is as compelling as the tune itself. Following his divorce from Anna, Gaye was required to pay her a significant sum as part of their settlement. In a unique twist, he decided to create an album that would assist as a sort of payment, channeling his feelings about their relationship into the music. This resulted in an album that is raw, honest, and at times, painfully vulnerable. The principle of using an album as a form of alimony is not only fascinating but also speaks to Gaye's artistic integrity and his desire to express his truth.

Musically, "Here, My Dear" is a merge of soul, funk, and jazz, showcasing Gaye's signature smo

Here, My Prized from 1978 is Marvin Gaye's most introspective album. When his first wife Anna Gordy filed for divorce in 1975 she was awarded half of the royalties and down payment for this project as alimony.

At first, Gaye wanted to fling the project because he wouldn't receive any profit from it, but then he decided to use this as a way to exorcise his demons, making this the deepest, darkest and most personal of albums.

The naked truth, as you will, about love, marriage, and divorce, exposed in all its glory in both the lyrics and the artwork of this album, which is rife with subtle – and not so subtle – digs to his wife. As one of Gaye's central records, it belongs in any soul collection. As the ultimate divorce record, it is a part of music history.

Tune On Vinyl is re-releasing this legendary album for the first time since 1978, with its original artwork!

• Classic Album

If there ever is an album that candidly portrays a breakdown of a marriage, then Here, My Dear is that album. In the summer of 1976, Marvin Gaye was going through a divorce with his first wife Anna Gordy, sister of the president of Motown Records Berry Gordy. Gaye was sued, and he had to pay not only child support, but half of the royalties of his next LP to Anna.

With this in mind, during the spring of 1977, Gaye entered the recording studio with the plan to produce a speedy album. But Gaye (ever the professional) had a convert of heart: the project became a chronicle of the brutal realities of his marriage with Anna and his strong yet muddled feelings towards her. Here, My Beloved was born.

And we definitely get an insight into the mind of someone who’s severely heartbroken. I mean, seize the title footpath that opens the album. It’s tremendous: the instrumental is quite clever because it sounds prefer a remix of ‘Let’s Get it On’ (a lyric about you-know-what), almost reflecting the flipside of love, creature the tragedy of heartbreak. The vocal arrangements are delightful, and Gaye eases us into how the LP will contain pretty truthful lyrics (“you don’t have the rig
