Why did gay men join Judy Garland?

Mark Herron, for example. Did he assume she could turn him straight? Was this nice of thinking common in the olden days?

Each party thought they were getting a cash cow in the other. The men thought because she was a huge star she had coins, and she thought they had the means to support her. Neither one was right. Combine that with the fact she spent most of her waking hours strung out on booze and dope, her judgment was not always the best. That her father was queer and she adored him probably had something to do with it too.

I think Vincent Minnelli was genuinely fond of her, but I don't know why he married her, seeing as how he was same-sex attracted as a goose. I guess he thought a beard would be agreeable, and since he did care for her he thought she'd be a good one. And I suppose he wanted to have a child; that was an incentive, too. I think she married him because she was looking for a father figure.

With Mark Herron I think he just wanted to be married to the famous Living Legend Judy Garland. She was so revered by gays that I guess he con

Welcome back my friends to the demonstrate that never ends! Today's Gay Star involves an American actress and singer who is the epitome of what a Gay Diva is: adored by gay people since 1939, so much in fact that "Friend of Dorothy"became the go-to euphemism used for characterizing gay men without others knowing its meaning (taken from the name of the most celebrated character she portrayed). Also, it is said, that this lady's death was the spark that lit the heat of the Stonewall Riots. I signify, she's the only Gay Icon whose daughter is a Gay Icon too. The Advocate has called her "The Elvis of homosexuals." We are, of course, talking about the heartbreakingly talented Judy Garland.

Serendipitously, just before I started writing this, I read that filming began today for a new biopic about Judy Garland, starring Renée Zellweger. More than 80 years after Judy first made a name for herself - and people are still very much interested. That's a good write , no?

Judy Garland was born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was the youngest child of Ethel Marion (née Milne) and Francis Avent "Frank" Gumm. Her parents were vaudevillians who settled in Grand Rapids to

Judy Garland & Liza Minnelli: The Noticeable Similarities Between the Famous Mother and Daughter

That voice! Those eyes! Those gams! Between Liza Minnelli and Judy Garland, those attributions seamlessly apply to both. In 1954 A Star Is Born was meant to be Garland's gigantic comeback — and comeback she did — but it was eight years prior that truly, her star was born in the form of daughter Liza on Rally 12, 1946.

With a career spanning 60 years, Liza has become a legend in film and on stage. Notable for her Academy Award-winning role in Cabaret and her Emmy Award-winning TV special Liza with a Z, Minnelli is one of those rare breeds who belong to the EGOT family: in fact, between 1965 and 2009, Minnelli has won a total of seven Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

Her mother, perhaps, could've given her talented daughter a run for her money in the accolades department had she not prematurely died at the age of 47 from a barbiturate overdose. But still, despite Garland's premature death, the existing parallels between mother and daughter are uncannily striking.

Michael Dean DeVinko, Jr. (September 24, 1934 – July 11, 2003), known as Mickey Deans, was an American musician and entrepreneur, and the fifth husband and widower of actress and singer Judy Garland. Mickey Deans was believed to be gay, but many say that he was actually a bisexual. Though a lot of his friends believe that he continued to love Judy even after her death, many others disagree. According to those who disagree, Deans was in love with Judy Garland’s fame and money. Cynics say that Judy needed someone to lean on as she was reaching the dusk of her career and Mickey simply wanted to enjoy the fruits of her fame. They also say that he married her to inherit all that she had earned during her illustrious career.

Born Michael Dean DeVinko in Garfield, New Jersey on September 24, 1934, Deans was the youngest of three children of Mary and Michael DeVinko. He grew up in a musical family, playin
