Hip with a mid-century, quirky chic Albuquerque moves to a unique rhythm with its own different personality. Most people used to recognize of Albuquerque from Bugs Bunny, who would say, ” I shoulda made a left toin at Albuquoique!” Growing up in ABQ, as us natives call it, I laughed to consider that my metropolis was recognized by such an iconic figure.

But that’s the past – today, ABQ is a growing metropolis packed of whimsical sights, crisp scents, and passionate sounds. You can find anything other metropolitan areas have, but with an ABQ twist I call, “AlbuQuirky!”.

Bugs Bunny wasn’t the only Hollywood luminary to recognize ABQ. Ethel, (actress Vivian Vance), Lucy’s sidekick on the I Love Lucy Business, hailed from ABQ. This sunny southwestern city has long had a mighty following among artsy types, outdoors enthusiasts, and members of the LGBTQ people. A Bit of Albuquerque History

Now a major metropolitan area in New Mexico, Albuquerque began as an ancestral Native American homeland, which was the case for more than 12,000 years. It was occupied by Native American pueblos at the time that the Europeans arrived in 1540. Albuquerque was officially founded in 1706 by Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdes, who was governor and captain general of New Mexico, and who named it for the Duke of Albuquerque. Prior to officially becoming a part of the United States, it was an important trading center on the Chihuahua Trail from Mexico. PFLAG is a national organization that promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and gender diverse persons, as well as their families and friends. PFLAG provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a world that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. The Albuquerque chapter of PFLAG meets the third Tuesday of every month from 7:00-9:30 pm at the First Congregational Church, 2801 Lomas Blvd NE, on the corner of Lomas and Girard.
