Krakow still has a long way to go before you could consider it LGBTQ-friendly. Poland is a formerly communist country that missed out on the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s; the Catholic Church has been a dominant voice on domestic policy for centuries, hence why same sex marriage is still illegal. Violence towards the LGBTQ collective is not uncommon unfortunately, so it’s best to continue discreet and escape public displays of affection with your other half while you’re in public.

Thankfully things are switching slowly, in recent years the Polish electorate voted in its first same-sex attracted and transsexual MPs, marking a significant shift in widespread opinion towards the LGBTQ community. The gay scene in Krakow, Warsaw and Poznan is origin to emerge from the underground, while May has been declared ‘Queer Month’ and it was estimated that more than ten thousand people attended Krakow’s Gay Pride event in 2019. Things have improved a lot in the past 10 years but there’s still a long journey ahead…

Poland may get a bad wrap when it comes to homophobia, but for every primitive moron, you'll find two more evolved legends. What doesn't often build the news is Krakow's colossal loved up queer & diverse community. You won't need to look hard to find that this open-minded city is open-armed to people of all shapes, sizes, colours & creeds. Recently, in reaction to violence at an LGBT rally in Białystok and, even more disturbingly, a Polish newspaper named called 'Gazeta Polska' distributing "LGBT Free Zone" Stickers, Krakow's cafe's, bars, clubs, restaurants, galleries & shops have banded together to make it easier to navigate the city safely by displaying "All are welcome" stickers. Why locals love it

Always good music and busy, Cocon is the largest queer club in Krakow and in Southern Poland. Although it is gay, Cocon's doors are unlocked to all distinct types of people. They have two separate dance floors with different melody and special events throughout the year with DJs, reside music, and kingly shows.

Why you should attend it

Party with the boys (and some girls) of the Polish LGBT people and experience a different side of Krakow. Most party-goers start their evening somewhere in Kazimierz or the Antique Town and conclude up here until the early hours of the morning.

Stop by on Thursday when the club is opened for karaoke. Free on Fridays and 10 PLN on Saturdays.
