Was george maharis gay
With his Mediterranean fine looks and his charisma, this actor/singer/painter was leading male material. He didn't have the career that he deserved though. Perhaps the fact that he never cared to carefully conceal the fact that he is gay played a major part in this.
Tall, black and handsome, not to mention a charismatic rebel of 60s Hollywood, player George Maharis (real Greek family mention is Mahairas) was born in 1928 in Astoria, Modern York as one of seven children. His immigrant father was a restaurateur. George expressed an early interest in singing and initially pursued it as a career, but extensive overuse and improper vocal lessons stripped his chords and he subsequently veered towards an acting career.
Trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner and the Actor's Studio with Lee Strasberg, the "Method" actor found roles on dramatic TV, including a not many episodes of "The Naked City," and secured an ahead name for himself on the delayed 1950s's off-Broadway scene, especially with his performances in Jean Genet's "Deathwatch" and Edward Albee's "Zoo Story". Producer/director Otto Preminger "discovered" George for film, offering the actor a choice of five small roles f

UPDATE: I first wrote about actor George Maharis in October 2021. Today I learned that he passed away at the age 95.
Before 1960, George Maharis’ screen credits include minor TV appearances and a supporting role in the film “Exodus”.
His breakthrough came with the series “Route 66”, a now classic present that ran 4 seasons (1960-1964). In it, he and actor Martin Milner traveled across the US in a Corvette convertible. Maharis became a TV star.
But during the 3rd season it was reported that Maharis came down with hepatitis and was hospitalized. Depending on which Google link you follow, Maharis used the hepatitis as a ploy to reduce his serve hours and acquire a pay boost. Another explanation is that it was his excuse to quit the series and pursue a movies career.
There’s another behinds-the-scenes story… that George Maharis was gay and possibly was exposed to hepatitis via sexual partners (hepatitis is more prevalent among gays than straight men).
There are several websites that mention Maharis was arrested twice, in 1967 and 1974, for engaging in sex with men in common restrooms. Although you can find a picture of a news article on the web, there is no meet o
Back in 1985 and 1986, Nickelodeon's novel adult programming block, Nick at Nite, primarily aired black and white television shows from 20 to 25 years earlier. I still remember most of the lyrics they came up with for the My Three Sonstheme on one of the promos:
They've got a dad
His entitle is Steve
He's got a job
He's really tall
And then there's Bud
He makes some food
They've got a dog
They're My Three Sons (on Nick at Nite!)
One of the shows Nick at Nite aired during that era was Route 66, a 1960-1964 series about two guys and a car, wandering the nation together. John and I were much impressed with the writing on the show, so much so that we started taping it.
In early 1986, when John came into some money, we put our stuff in storage, bought a van, put a bed in the assist of it, and started driving around the land ourselves. Partly we were looking "for someplace it isn't winter," but one of the goals was for me to document a book about Direction 66, both the route and the tv series. Before the year was out, we drove on or near much of the decommissioned "Mother Road," talked to people from small towns and roadside businesse
