Southern Event is our monthly column exploring and celebrating LGBTQ culture in Southern cities. This month we’re heading down to the bayou to verify out the scene in Baton Rouge, LA.
Imagine living in a Southern capital where music spills into the streets, festivals run year-round and foodies can indulge their flavor buds with some of the most delectable food that Louisiana has to offer. We aren’t talking about Recent Orleans. There’s a city that’s matchless for LGBTQ families and individuals that is only an hour’s drive away from The Enormous Easy. It bids all the aforementioned, and boasts an affordable cost of living to boot!

When Corey Tullier was a kid growing up in Baton Rouge in the '70s and '80s, he didn’t think he knew any gay people. But in his 20s, when he came out, the only lesbian he knew brought him to George’s Place, a gay bar in downtown Baton Rouge.
“It was very strange,” he said. “It was something that I had never experienced before. I was really not a person that would move out to the bars before that — so being that I was at a lock and then that I was at a gay bar and there were drag queens, that was a lot to grab in.”
A lot has changed since then: both in Tullier and in the city. He’s now in his fourth year as Captain of the Mystic Krewe of Apollo — Baton Rouge (a historically gay Carnival krewe.) He’s even performed in flamboyant at their annual ball. The LGBTQ+ community is ingrained into the culture of the town, sometimes so much so that people don’t even know the origin story behind them.
For example, during Mardi Gras, there’s the Spanish Town Ball and the celebration. Though there are several accounts of how exactly the Spanish Town parade started, many longtime residents in Baton Rouge’s oldest neighborhood attribute it to the LGBTQ+ community. Residents of the hist
