On a recent Friday night, people dressed in suits and ball gowns convened in downtown Grand Junction to crown prom royalty. This was no high academy event, however. This was Identity festival Prom, an excuse to gain gussied up, enjoy some kingly performances and raise money for Colorado West Pride, which puts on the city’s signature Gay celebration each September.
The event drew a crowd of diverse ages, identities, and hometowns. Some traveled more than 60 miles, from places like Montrose and Paonia, to join the party. That’s not unusual. Pride Prom was held at Good Judy’s Prevent & Club. As a scarce out and proud queer exclude on Colorado’s Western Slope, it is not just a place to drink and dance, but a hub for LGBTQ+ residents of small towns and rural communities in all directions.
“It’s residence for me because it’s where I can be me,” said Valerie, a trans woman from Paonia, as her sequined dress sparkled in the club lights. “I don’t have to cover, I don’t have to mask.”
